Working Visitor Cover FAQs

What Overseas Visitors products meet Working Visa requirements?

Great news! All four of our affordable working visa visitors' health cover options are visa-compliant. Our Working Visa covers are suitable for visitors on working visas and aged under 65.

  • Basic Working Visa
  • Essentials Working Visa
  • Intermediate Working Visa
  • Comprehensive Working Visa

You can rest assured that the health insurance component of your visa requirements will be met. With HIF, you’ll also automatically receive a letter of visa compliance by email as soon as your application has been submitted (if you’ve opted to receive one). This letter will be sent to you in PDF format, meaning you can forward it straight on to your immigration agent.

Please note: Our Visitor Saver option for non-working visa holders is not a visa-compliant product and does not meet the requirements of the Department of Home Affairs visa conditions 8501. We cannot issue a letter of visa compliance for this product.

To find out more about our overseas working visa products, please visit our Working Visa Health Cover webpage. You can get an online quote or to get in contact with us.

Can I switch health funds if I received a visa compliance letter from another fund?

Yes, you can. Your health insurance cover is completely portable and we will even recognise your membership with your previous fund, which means you don’t have to re-serve waiting periods you’ve already served with another health insurance provider. Visit our page Switching From Another Health Fund - HIF for more details.

How quickly will I get my visa compliance letter?

Instantly! Whether you join online or over the phone, your letter of visa compliance will be emailed to you automatically as soon as your application is submitted. The letter will be sent to you in PDF format, meaning you can forward it straight on to your immigration liaison.

Useful tip: If you have registered a Hotmail or Gmail email address on your application form, please ensure you check your junk mail folder as our letters sometimes get filtered by those providers.

What does HIF Overseas Visitor Hospital & Medical Insurance include?

Our Overseas visitor cover products gives you access to the hospital system in Australia – your level of cover determines whether you’re able to access public hospitals or both public and private hospitals. Before we go on, it’s important that you understand the Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS).

The MBS is the schedule of fees set by the Australian Government for standard medical services. As a member who holds overseas visitor cover with HIF insurance, you’ll be covered for at least 100% of the MBS fee if you are admitted (as an inpatient) into a hospital or a day facility. However, if your doctor charges more than the MBS fee you will need to pay these out-of-pocket expenses yourself. Please contact HIF for a medical estimate prior to admission. Learn more about the MBS

Most of our Overseas Visitor Policies cover you for out-of-hospital services, such as consultations with general practitioners, doctors, specialist consultants and other services, including x-rays and blood tests and medical treatment in a hospital emergency or casualty department. Limits and exclusions apply to some of our policies though, so please download a copy of our Visitors Health Cover Guide for full details.

Can I get a refund if my visa is not approved?

Yes. If your Australian visa application is unsuccessful please let us know. We will cancel your membership and refund any premiums you have already pre-paid for your health insurance, however a $50 admin fee may apply.

Can I add Extras cover to my Overseas Visitors policy?

Absolutely! Combining HIF Extras cover (also known as ‘ancillary’ or 'auxiliary') with one of our Visitors Cover options is the best way to ensure peace of mind for you and your family while you’re in Australia.

Extras insurance is used to cover general treatment such as ambulance, dental, optical, pharmacy, physiotherapy, podiatry consultations and speech therapy. It can cover part (or all) of the cost, depending on your level of cover and the providers charge.

To find out more, visit our Comparison Table.

Alternatively, if you're already an HIF member and would like to add Extras Cover to your membership; simply complete our Member Variation Form and email a copy to hello@hif.com.au

Once your request has been actioned, a letter will be sent to your preferred method of communication (post or email).
